The development of a succesful airport starts with a well conceived masterplan. Wherever the backbone of masterplanning is formed by traffic forecasts and subsequent plot allocation and sizing, timely consideration should be given to allocation of utility corridors and to the constraints that (future) navigational aids and surveillance systems may pose.

Deerns routinely provides such input into masterplans as they are developed. Projects have ranged from relatively small domestic airports, in a.o. the Philippines and Saudi Arabia, to very large international hub airport developments like the new Bangkok International Airport, Kuala Lumpur International Airport and King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The logical next step after preparation of a masterplan is the development of a conceptual design, for individual facilities or for an airport as a whole. Airport development projects are often seen as a means for improving local engineering skills within a developing country. We are experienced in working with local engineers.

In many projects funded by ADB, World Bank or EIB, Deerns staff have been responsible for the conceptual design and subsequently worked with local staff to prepare the final design and tender documents. This approach ensures the transfer of technology to the local engineering firms and provides a cost effective design which fully complies to local building standards.
